Vasylkiv was founded in 988 by Prince Vladimir. City named from honor of the prince’s Christian appellation. Was an important base of defense and one of the trading and crafts center of Kyivan Rus’. For a period of time this city was also the center of an independent principality. Was destroyed by the Tatar-Mongols in 1240. During the second half of the 13th century Vasylkiv administered the affairs of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Scholars speculate that Feodosiy Pechersky, the abbot of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, was born in Vasylkiv. From the middle 14th century the city was under Lithuanian rule and from 1654 – under Russia. Vasylkiv became the country center in 1797. It eventually recovered and was incorporated as a city in 1796. In 1825, troops based there took part in the Decembrist uprising. In 1918-1919 the city was wrested from Bolshevik control several times by Ukrainian armies.
The city has hosted Vasilkov air base during the Cold War years.
